He leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years, Bernardette, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, devotion, and treasured memories. Valdemar was a loving father to Kelly Rosa (Gina), and Susie Fita (Mario) and a proud grandfather to Tiffany, Vanessa, Ashlyn, and Rachel, who brought him immeasurable joy. He will also be dearly missed by his furry companions, Millie and Felix.
Valdemar will be lovingly remembered by his brother, Jaime (Filomena), Joe Barbosa; his Fonseca in-laws, and many cousins, godchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Jaime and Fernanda, and his sister, Lina Barbosa.
Born in Terceira, Azores, Portugal, Valdemar immigrated to Canada with his parents and siblings in 1967, settling in Preston and beginning a new chapter of his life. In 1969 he married Bernardette, beginning their beautiful partnership that would span 57 years. Together, they built a life of love and devotion.
Valdemar dedicated his entire working career to Arriscraft (Angel Stone) where he worked faithfully as a foreman. His commitment and loyalty were reflected in the many years he spent with the company.
A passionate supporter of the Cambridge Oriental Soccer Club, Valdemar gave his time generously, serving in many roles throughout the years including president. His involvement in the club was an important part of his life, allowing him to share his love of the game and contribute to the community that meant so much to him.
Above all, Valdemar treasured his family, especially the time he spent with his grandchildren. Whether working on his puzzles, playing dominoes or cards, or enjoying word searches, he found happiness in the simple pleasures of life and being surrounded by those who meant the most to him. He also had a love for travel and adventure, whether setting out many road trips to Massachusetts or travelling to Cuba and Portugal. A master at reading maps, he always enjoyed finding his way to new places.
Valdemar will be remembered for his kind heart, generous spirit, and willingness to help others. His generosity extended beyond his immediate family, as he helped many relatives begin new lives in Canada, including sponsoring family members and helping his in-laws immigrate from the Azores. He gave his love wholeheartedly, always willing to lend a hand to those who needed it.
Valdemar’s life will be celebrated on Friday, November 6th, with a memorial visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Barthel Funeral Home, 566 Queenston Road, Cambridge.
