Dr. Cathy Ann Martin

Dr. Cathy Martin, a revered matriarch and beacon of hope and resilience, has left an unfillable void in the hearts of her loved ones and community. Her passing leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the well-being of her people.

Predeceased by her loving parents, William Martin "Billy Boy" and Joan Walsh, Dr. Martin is survived by her five children: Aaron Jacques, Marcy Jacques, Sailor Jacques, Jaclyn Jacques, and Sherise Swanson; her five grandchildren: Mia Arsenault, Adonis "Donnie" Hamilton, Oliver Jacques, Roman Arsenault, and Aspen Jacques; and her brothers and sister: Billy Martin, Patricia “Patty” Martin, Scott Martin, James “Jimmy” Martin, and Richard “Dickie” Martin.

As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary woman, we are reminded of the profound impact she had on those around her. Her unwavering commitment to serving others, her compassion, and her empathy were the hallmarks of her remarkable life. She was a true leader, advocating for those in need and working tirelessly to uplift her community.

Dr. Martin was a fierce warrior for her people, fighting for their rights at the local and national level. She served for over 20 years as a councillor in her own community, championing the rights of her people and promoting the Mi'gmaq traditional ways. She also ran for national chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) and regional chief of the AFN Quebec-Labrador, demonstrating her courage and dedication to leadership.

As a mother, Dr. Martin's love and support were unconditional, instilling a sense of purpose and belonging in her family. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she celebrated their successes, supported them through their struggles, and loved them without condition.

Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched, but her absence will be deeply felt. The world is a darker place without her, and her memory will be a reminder of the countless lives she impacted.
