It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mr. Jonathan “Spanky” Barnaby of Listuguj, Quebec, life partner of Crystal Moffat. A beloved father, teacher, coach, role model, and friend, Jonathan passed away on Friday, July 18, 2025, at the age of 43.
Born on November 4, 1981, in Campbellton, NB, Jonathan was raised by his loving grandparents, Margaret Rose Sewell and Andrew Joseph “Andy Cakes.” Their love and guidance helped shape him into the remarkable man he became.
Jonathan was a passionate outdoor education teacher at Alaqsite’w Gitpu School (AGS), where he inspired countless students through his deep love of nature, Mi’gmaq culture, and adventure. He held a strong connection to the land and the Mi’gmaq people, guiding others to reconnect with their identity and traditions.
Alongside his partner Crystal, Jonathan is survived by his beloved children: Jaiden, Oaklyn, Hawk, and Tucker — each of whom he cherished deeply.
Jonathan’s impact on our community will be felt for generations. His legacy lives on in every student he mentored, every athlete he coached, and everyone fortunate enough to hear his laughter or be part of one of his legendary jokes. We will miss him dearly — and we know his stories will continue to be shared with love and laughter.
Visitations will be held at Maher's Funeral Home, 33 Lansdowne street in Campbellton on July 28 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and from 7:00pm to 9:00pm
