Kathleen "Kay" (Chatterton) Kaine

Kay was born on October 14, 1932 in Campbellton to the late James Chatterton and the late Ebba Larsen.

Kay worked as the Assistant City Treasure for the City of Campbellton for 30 years until her retirement in 1987. She enjoyed travelling with Bev as well as quilting with the ladies and was an active member of the Tuesday afternoon Women’s Bowling League until Covid. She was a Faithful Chrisian Woman who taught Sunday School for over 40 years and her relationship with God was important and her Bible was never far away. Whenever she encountered someone in need she would not hesitate to pray with them and always took time for people. She worked in the Church all her life and would never accept that she was old enough that she could pass the torch on so someone else.

Bev and Kay delivered Meals on Wheels and were an active part of the Village Nursing Home for over 40 years. She was a part of the Women’s Group of the Gideons International and gave many white New Testaments to Graduating Nurse’s. Every year she canvassed for the Heart and Stroke as well as the Cancer both of the health issues that our family has faced. After turning 80 she decided that perhaps someone else should take over.

Kay loved to have her family around and enjoyed her trips to the trailer at Camp Evangeline for the summer months. Time with her sister Florence in Southhampton, NS was an important part of her life and any chance she had they would take to visit even parking the motorhome in the yard for weeks at a time.

Her children and grandchildren were always on her mind when she would shop. Often Colleen and Randall would come home and find extra milk and other food items slipped into the fridge helping both of them raise children as single parents.

While Kay did not have children, after marrying Bev in June 1973 she instantly became a Mother to Colleen and Randall. When people would refer to them as her step-children she would always correct them and say, No, they are my children. She loved them as much or more than many Mother’s. In November 1999, Bev suffered a stroke requiring Brain Surgery in Moncton. She spent many long hours at his bedside and did not accept anything other than God was going to allow him to live at home for many more years. She loved him, cared for him and always put him first in whatever she did.

She enjoyed baking and with Bev’s sweet tooth, kept him in homemade sweets and always had extras in the freezer for him.

In June 2020, she had a medical crisis and was in the hospital for several months. Upon returning home she required Home Services and had excellent care from a Home Care Worker named Sue who is an Angel that looked after things. Following her declining health Bev and Kay could be found walking around the waterfront and listening to some live music during the summer or on a short trip to Rossy’s in the mall.

The Family were blessed to have her at home until January 2023 when more medical care was needed and she was in the Campbellton Regional Hospital until October 3 when she was moved to the Village. While only being a resident for exactly two months, she could be found walking all over the place.

When Bev and Colleen would go to visit they would have the staff directing them to whatever direction she was in. She was always up for whatever Activity was going on that day. One staff member said that if he had told her they were going bungy jumping off the Van Horne bridge she would probably be the first one in line. She was the youngest 91 year old at heart you could ever find.

Thank You to all the Village Nursing Home staff who made her last 2 months the absolute BEST that she could have had.

Her life can be summed up in the Scripture Verse 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

She is survived by her loving Husband Bev as well as her children Colleen and Randall (Natacha). Also her four Grandchildren, Ashley (Jay) Holmes, Robert Kaine, Spencer Kaine and Trevor Kaine. She is also survived by her two Great-Grandchildren Oliver and Maxwell, her sister Florence Way as well as nieces and nephews, James Chatterton (Kathy), Judy Ingraham (Fraser), Bill Chatterton (Arnesta), Ruth Langille (John), Heather Meszaros (David), Tim Way (Kristy), Cheryl Young (Stephen), Paul Way (Sabina) as well as many Great Nieces and Nephews.

She was predeceased by.. her parents James and Ebba (Larsen) Chatterton as well as her brother Ernest Chatterton.
