Susan was born on June 21, 1959 in Southington, Connecticut to the late Lawrence Basque and late Eleanor Gedeon.
Susan mentored and guided countless youth while she worked as a Youth Educator at Gignu in Listuguj, QC until her retirement in 2016. Soon after she began her second career as the fabulous cook at the Mi’gmaq Star Fish Market.
She is survived by her two sons Sky and Casey (Dawn), her four beautiful grandchildren, Camden, Holden, Odin and Vienna, and her younger brothers, Larry (Joyce), Richard and Jeff. She was the beloved niece of Brenda Gedeon, as well as Leo Basque and is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her younger brother, Tim.
Susan had a remarkable zest for life and loved spending time outdoors. She was an avid snowmobiler and enjoyed camping, trailering, beach cookouts and time spent in the woods. She was a very spiritual person and continuously grew her knowledge and practiced her Mi’gmaq culture. She was very involved in her community, and she held positions on the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Development Centre (LMDC) Board of Directors. She also served as a 'JR' Elder for the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Secretariat Elders Committee. Perhaps the most significant contribution Susan made to her community was her involvement in the original Listuguj Powwow Committee, where she served as the Arena Director at the very first gathering of the Mi’gmaq nation, as part of the Wabanaki Confederacy in 1993.
Susan loved her family, friends and community fiercely and she will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege and pleasure of knowing her.
