Val was the fourth child of Robert A. and Amelia (Matthews) Stewart. He was born May 8th, 1932 in Sillikers, New Brunswick.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 56 years Helen (Mullin), his daughter Brenda Stewart Jenkins (Stephen) of Auburn, Alabama, grandchildren, Daniel, Michael and Leah Jenkins, his son Brent Stewart (Rachel Renault) of Fredericton, grandchildren Abigail and Sophie. His children and grandchildren were so dear to him. He also leaves to mourn his brother William Stewart (Terry), South Esk, NB, his sister Geraldine Doyle (Milford, Michigan) and his sister Donna Sheach (Oxford, Michigan) as well as many nieces and nephews. Val was predeceased by his parents, his sister Gwen Thompson and her husband Bob Thompson, his sister Veda Hamilton and her husband Raymond, his sister in law Frances Stewart, brothers in law Robert Doyle, Bruce Sheach, and Robert Mullin.
Val was a graduate of Sillikers High School, the Maritime Ranger School and the Lawrencetown Survey School (now the Annapolis Valley Campus of NSCC). His career as a forester and surveyor began with Fraser Company and included time as an NB Forest Ranger before going into private business (Stewart Survey’s Ltd – 1975) where he and Helen worked “as a team.” He was a perfectionist in his field and his expectations were high as far as his “Secretary” was concerned. His clientele was very important to him as were his relations with the many Barristers he collaborated with. He was President of the provincial association of Land Surveyors in 1973 and in 2014 he was presented with the George Sproule Award for his life time of contribution to the Land Surveying profession in New Brunswick. At the time of this presentation he was the second oldest practicing surveyor in Canada.
Val was an adherent to the Tide Head United Church, a member of the F. and A. Masonic Lodge #32, Campbellton and a past member of the Restigouche Snowmobile Club.
Val was an avid snowmobiler and boater, an exceptional woodsman and a Horse Haul enthusiast. He loved his trips with the boys and spending time with his Restigouche River canoeing family. He also loved the evenings Helen’s gal pals came in to have their individual chats so he could hear “news.”
The Family wishes to express our thanks for the excellent and compassionate care Val received at the Emergency Unit and the ICU unit with a special thanks to Dr. Yacoub, Dr. Rosenthall, Dr. Calugariou and to Erica and Amy.
