Frances Leoma Whiten, affectionately known as “Fran” to her family, traded her time on this earth for her eternity in Heaven, on March 24, 2020, in Dallas, TX. Born August 26, 1931 in Shreveport, LA to the late Bennie E. and Leoma Pryor Whiten, Frances obtained her Bachelor’s Degree from Wiley College in Marshall, TX. She later went on to earn her Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan.
Frances was a devoted and compassionate teacher for 40 years. She was a devout and committed Christian, and a faithful member of Lewis Metropolitan CME Church in Los Angeles, where she was a member of the Trustee board, the Board of Christian Education and a Sunday School teacher. She was a lifetime member of her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, where she held numerous offices and positions, and happily attending annual galas. She was committed to education, and was honored for her social involvement and fundraising by the United Negro College Fund. She was an active member of the Wiley College Los Angeles Alumni Association. Frances was known for her sharp wit, and sometimes; for being somewhat blunt. She was an active and intrepid traveler and was known for being willing to go anywhere.
She was also known for her love of partying and for being a generous hostess. Frances truly enjoyed being dressed "to the nines", regardless of the occasion.
Frances will be interred at Carver Cemetery in Dallas, where her parents and her “sister in heart” Murdine Berry await her. Interment will be private.
She is survived by her brother: Bennie E. Whiten, Jr and wife, Sue of Oak Park IL; sister: Dr. Joycelyn Whiten of Los Angeles, CA ; God-Daughters: Jody Nell Berry of Dallas, TX and Cindy Chatman of greater Los Angeles; nieces: Ariana Harris of Los Angeles and Leslie Whiten of Abington, MD; nephew: Bennie Whiten, III of La Grange, Illinois, 3 great nieces and nephews and 4 great-great-nieces and nephews, along with a host of church family, sorority sisters, and friends.
Her family and friends will always be grateful to Life Services, Inc., for the loving care they provided to Frances in her last years. Special thanks to Leticia Castellanos for her generous spirit, unfailing love and caring support in these last years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wiley College in Frances' honor.
