

After more than a yearlong battle with Stage 4 cancer, Leonel Xavier Muñoz of Addison, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2015, at the age of 67. A leap year baby, he was born in Edinburg, Texas on February 29, 1948, to the late Leonel Muñoz and Julia Muñoz. Known as “Butch” to family and friends, he was raised in Edinburg, Texas. Butch graduated from Edinburg High School, and then went on to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. He was active in the U.S. Army 1971–1978, ranked as Captain, and served in the U.S. Army Reserves 1978-1983. He was also a part of the 5th Group of Special Forces. After his Army service, Butch worked for Exxon Corporation for more than 20 years as a Terminal Superintendent, Project Manager, and Environmental Quality Control Specialist starting in Florida, then assigned to projects in Tennessee, and finally Texas. Recently Butch has been an active member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Dallas and the Knights of Columbus Council #5656. He also helped establish the Men’s ACTS Retreat Program at St. Monica. Butch enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by sons, Robert (and wife Doris), Micah, and Nicolas; daughter, Aymee; brother, Rolando (and wife Wendy); sister, Sylvia; granddaughter, Julia Avery; and niece, Anastasia. A Rosary will be recited at St. Monica Catholic Church on Thursday January 14, 2016 at 6:30 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held ad St. Monica on Friday January 15, 2016 at 11:00 am. Inurnment will be held at D/FW National Cemetery at on January 15, 2016 at 3:15 pm.
