Loyd F. Carter, Jr., passed away August 16th at home in Chehalis, WA. He was born October 12, 1924, in Portland, OR to Loyd F. and Dora Alice (Finch) Carter, the oldest of two sons. Loyd grew up in the Alameda area of Portland, graduating from Grant High School in 1942. During his youth many hours were spent at the family cabin in Rhododendron, OR which his grandfather built. The family also had a beach cottage in Newport, OR.
He joined the Army and soon after landing in Europe he was captured by the Germans. He survived a prisoner of war camp as a guest of the Third Reich (as he liked to say). After returning home he graduated from Oregon State University with a bachelors degree.
Soon after finishing college he met Helen Marie Kerka. On July 1, 1951, Loyd and Helen were married at his parents home in Portland. To this marriage, three daughters were born. Helen preceded Loyd in death in 1965.
Loyd was employed with Standard Insurance Company as an Insurance Agent in Portland. He retired from this position in the 70's.
In 1981 Loyd met Joy Cloud and they were subsequently married. Since then they have rarely been apart. After living in Friday Harbor, WA for 15 years, traveling the country in a fifth wheel for a couple of years, they settled in Chehalis in 1998.
Loyd's number one passion was flying. From a young age he was fascinated with airplanes. His Piper 180 comanche was his baby. Loyd also enjoyed reading, sailing, skiing, hiking and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Joy at home; a brother, Richard (Penny); three daughters, Nancy (Randy), Susan (Mike) and Sally; 2 step-sons, Mike, Ken (Kathy); four grandchildren, Heather (Jeff), Shaun (Tessa), Matthew (Brittany), and Kolin; two step-grandchildren, Rian (Heather) and Jennifer (Gabe); and ten great grandchildren, Kaydence, Brycen, Bradley, Glen, Thomas, Benjamin, Lauren, Landon, Carter, and Liam.
