Betty Jo Ross Kerr

Betty Jo Ross Kerr passed away at age 91 on February 14, 2022, at Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, Charlotte, NC. She was born March 17, 1930, in Charlotte, NC to Lester Green Ross and Arleen Lytton Ross. The oldest of four children, she grew up in Charlotte and attended Charlotte Technical High School.

After high school Betty Jo studied to become a secretary and bookkeeper and used those skills at several businesses before joining the staff at WSOC Radio. She wore many hats there and eventually retired as an administrative assistant. She married in 1949 and raised three girls while juggling homemaking with her productive career. While she loved her time in radio, she once confessed, “I would have loved to have been a hairdresser” and enjoyed practicing on her three daughters!

Betty Jo liked shopping, traveling with Christian Tours, and going to the beach. Her greatest joy was time spent with her family. She was so proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved sharing in their exploits and hearing of their accomplishments.

Betty Jo is survived by two children and their families: Sherry Collins (partner, Johnny); Cathy Mitchell (husband, Lacy); grandchildren, Amber Solar (husband, Steve); Travis Mitchel (wife, Cassie); and great-grandchildren; Jessica Davis, Cory Solar, Logan Mitchell, and Aubrey Mitchell. Also surviving her are a sister, Julia Adams of Boone, NC; brother, Edwin Ross of Rocky Mount, NC; and a son-in-law, Don Barrett of Houston, TX. Betty Jo was predeceased by her husband Edwin Miller Kerr; daughter, Donna Brown Barrett; and brother Lester (Buddy) Ross.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 18th from 1:00 to 2:00pm at McEwen Funeral Service - Mint Hill Chapel 7428 Matthews Mint Hill Rd. Mint Hill, NC 28227. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
