He was born on June 10, 2011 in a cardiac operating room of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia after being diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome with a Restricted Atrial Septum in-utero.
Cam spent much of his childhood recovering from the series of open-heart surgeries necessary to palliate this condition. He was diagnosed as a failed Fontan in July 2024 and listed for heart transplant.
He received his gift of life on February 18, 2025; however, he suffered severe trauma from collateral vessel bleeding which led to irreparable damage to his already weakened lungs. By Saturday March 8, it became clear Cam’s body was telling us to let him go to Jesus. He continued his journey onward surrounded by his family and elders. After years of patient suffering, Cam has finally been freed. We rejoice in the midst of our crushing grief and pray with urgency for the return of Jesus and the reunification of our precious family.
Everyone who knew Cam loved him. His cheerful smile, contagious laughter, and ability to befriend were precious gifts. He faced much daily suffering, yet it never kept him from embracing joy. Whether he was playing “Fireflies” on his guitar for the whole hospital, creating Star Wars block battles with his siblings, arguing passionately about the Cold War, giggling over his Kindergarten Sunday School class’s funny comments, or barely breathing on 8 L. of oxygen at the top of Logan Pass in Glacier: “Mum, it’s so worth it,” his half-heart life is what made ours whole.
Cam loved Luna (and all dogs), Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, playing chess, reading history, creating Minecraft worlds, fishing at the Cottage, and building sandcastles at the beach. He loved his friends at his Bellator homeschool co-op, choir with Musical Heirs, guitar lessons with Mr. Nabb, and therapy riding with Mitey Riders. Cam was clever, funny, and kind; the hole his absence creates is a monumental tribute to his life.
Ecclesiastes tells us that nothing in this world is truly permanent; our lives are little more than ephemeral mists briefly caught up in the whirling dance of the planets. Some argue this means our lives have no meaning. But transience is not synonymous with empty. Cam’s brief dance under the sun argues that, whether our years are 13 or 130, we are never forgotten by our God, who has our names written in his Book of Life.
Cam brought the face of Jesus before so many, and when some of those people join him in eternity, because of these 13 short years, we will finally see face to face how much his brief life mattered. The memorials that matter are not found in the decaying sand of Earth’s Ozymandian temptations- health, money, comfort, reputation. Cam’s memorial is founded in the souls of other human beings that he made more joyful, more peaceful, more beautiful as he reflected the love and kindness of Jesus Christ into their souls. This permanent marker makes his life more precious than thousands of years pursuing emptiness.
Cam leaves behind his father and mother, Luke and Evelyn; siblings, Margaret, Audrey, Calum, and Virginia; paternal grandparents, William and Cynthia; maternal grandparents, Kevin and Louise; Aunts, Martha, Heather, Naomi, and Karen; Uncles Jacob, James, Justin, Nate, and Michael; and cousins, Jane, Ruby, Graham, Kate, William, Shaw, Mia, Charlotte, Thomas, Theodore, and Maximus.
He also leaves a host of friends and church family eagerly awaiting the time when, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
A visitation for Cam will be held Thursday, March 13th, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227.
Funeral services will occur Friday, March 14th, 2025 at 12:00 PM at Christ Covenant Church, 800 Fullwood Lane, Matthews, NC 28105 with burial to follow in Matthews Historic Cemetery, Fullwood Lane, Matthews, NC 28105.
Cam's family asks that donations be considered to the charities listed in lieu of flowers.
