

“Charlie”, 74 of Mint Hill, NC, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born April 9, 1937 in Charlotte, NC and was a son of the late A.Y. and Ella Mae Miller. He was preceded in death by his daughter Kimberly Miller Thompson.
Charlie married the love of his life Gayle Kiser Miller on December 20, 1959. They spent 52 wonderful years together and had three beautiful children.
Charlie served his country during his military service in the Army and after his service, worked as a Charlotte Police Officer until his retirement in December 1992.
Charlie had a passion for coaching softball, basketball and baseball in Mint Hill and at Independence High and Northeast Jr. High schools. He led his teams to many wins along with several state championships. He also enjoyed his “Coffee Club” buddies every morning at Perry’s Market, where he loved telling his stories with special friends Charlie Scism, Ervin Perry, Danny Pritchard, Ben Cowan, and Joey Hartsell.
We will miss his quick wit, sarcasm, stories, his smile and his laugh.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Gayle Miller; son, Jeffery Miller and wife, Tammy, of Kannapolis, NC; daughter, Shannon VanDyke and Brian Burns of Indian Trail, NC; brother, Roger Miller of Little River, SC; sister, Deloris Petterson of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Tyler Miller of Ocean Isle Beach, SC, Justin Miller of Lancaster, SC, Brittany Thompson of Charlotte, NC, Ashton VanDyke of Indian Trail, NC, and Takota, Johnathan and Tehya of Kannapolis, NC; and two nieces, two nephews and many wonderful friends.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, November 28, 2011, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews Mint-Hill Road, at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 27, between the hours of 3:00 PM till 5:00 PM at the funeral home.
The family requests memorials be made in Charlie’s name to the American Cancer Society, 6000 Fairview Road, Suite 200, Charlotte, NC 28210 or Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, 6335 Wilson Grove Road, Charlotte, NC 28227.
