

Mrs. Doris Griffin Godwin, 80, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 under Hospice care. She was born on December 23, 1930 in Monroe, NC, the daughter of the late Stanley W. Griffin and Ollie Mae Baucom Griffin.
Mrs. Godwin graduated from Appalachian State University with a BA in education and immediately started her teaching career as an elementary school teacher, grades 4-5. After a blind date organized by a friend at the movie theater in Concord, she met the love of her life, a blond-haired, blue-eyed, dimpled face Bobby Godwin. They were married on May 20, 1955 and have been happily married for 56 years. After they moved to Charlotte in 1961, she taught for several years at Briarwood Elementary School. She stopped teaching after her last daughter was born.
Before her illness, Doris raised four children and was a teacher's aide at Garinger High School before retiring in 1990 to assist in taking care and raising her pride and joy; her granddaughter, Shelby Leigh Bailey. In addition to raising her four children, She took under her wing an "adopted" son, Jeff Ballard of Newport, Kentucky.
Doris was an active member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church where she sang with the senior choir, The Christianaires for many years. She was an avid reader of Christian novels and mysteries, enjoyed bird watching and loved to sing.
In addition to her parents, Doris was predeceased by her only sibling, her younger brother, Kenneth Griffin.
Doris is survived by her husband, Bobby, her four children, Kim Anderson, Melanie Godwin, Brooks Godwin (Julie Godwin), Teresa Bailey (Skip Bailey), and granddaughters, Shelby Bailey, all of Charlotte, NC and Terra Anderson Daughtry of Columbia, SC. Also surviving are her niece, Kenda Griffin Magnum and nephew, Brian Griffin of Marshville, NC.

Doris' life will be celebrated on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 2 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Service, Inc., 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, NC 28104.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all the hospice caregivers that have cared for Mom for the past four months and staff at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House.
