

She was born on October 22, 1935, to the late Verlin and Lena Long.
After graduating from East Mecklenburg High School, Ellen attended Appalachian State Teacher’s College where she earned her teaching degree and went on to teach in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system for 30 years. Ellen had many loves and enjoyments in her life including reading, word puzzles, and square dancing, where she danced with the Sardis Stars in her early years. She was also a lifetime member of Sardis Presbyterian Church where she was actively involved in the church choir. More importantly, Ellen loved her family and enjoyed all the precious moments and memories she made with them. She had a great sense of humor, was very generous, and loved helping and caring for others.
Along with her parents, Ellen is preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Long Hastings; son-in-law, Phillip Jurney; and nephew, Robert Hastings. She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Maxie Funderburk; daughters, Ann Anderson (Allan) and Martha Jurney; grandchildren, Michael Anderson, Erik Anderson, Rebecca Anderson, Taylor Jurney (Sarah), and Rachel Pound (Jason); brother-in-law, Fred Hastings (Betty); nephew, Victor Hastings (Elise); and finally, loved welcoming her first great-granddaughter, Sutton Rivers Pound.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 30th, 2026, at 11:30 am at Sardis Presbyterian Church, located at 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorials and donations can be made to Sardis Presbyterian Church.
