Joann "Jo" was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts, to the late Robert Carvalho and Barbara Green. In 1975, Jo graduated from Silver Lake High School in Kingston, Massachusetts. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services from Fitchburg State University in 1979 and went on to receive her Masters in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Jo met her future husband, Jerry, in 1978 at an international YMCA camp in the Western Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. Although Jo made it clear that it was only a summer fling and was sure that they would go their separate ways, they were reunited again a decade later and married in 1988. Together, they shared two children, Logan and Tyler. Jo loved her family and was so proud of her sons and what they have accomplished.
Jo spent her initial career teaching at the college level, most notably a professor in The Nursing School of Queens College, but her real passion was teaching science at Queens Grant High School. She truly had a gift of educating and she made an impact throughout the entire school community. Jo had compassion and patience for all of her students, and was committed to helping the entire Queens Grant High School community thrive. She created a lasting influence with those she worked alongside and taught.
Jo enjoyed warm summer days sitting on the beach reading a good horror book. She also loved cold winter nights in the mountains of North Carolina in front of the roaring fire. Jo was also a huge fan of Jimmy Buffet music, dragging her husband along to all of his concerts in the Carolinas. Jo had a heart for animals and always cherished her pets. Most of all, Jo loved spending time with her family. She always prioritized making lasting memories during the holiday season and she especially loved Halloween.
Jo made a difference in the lives of those she loved and cherished the most. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and school community
Jo is survived by her husband, Jerry Crowe and her two sons, Logan Crowe with her daughter-in-law, Megna Tiwari of Athens, Georgia, and Tyler Crowe of Harrisburg, North Carolina, and her three sisters, Carol Carvalho, Mary Carvalho-Brummitt and Laurie Gambler, and her many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life for Joann will be held Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 2:00 PM at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227.
