Joel Douglas Cochrane of Matthews, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025, just shy of his 75th birthday. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Joel lived a life marked by love, service, and unwavering faith.
Born on June 29, 1950, Doug graduated from Independence High School in June 1968. He was a proud member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir, faithfully opened the church doors every Sunday for others to enjoy, and lived out his deep love for the Lord Jesus Christ.
Doug was a man of many talents and passions. He worked in carpentry for over 30 years before transitioning into a successful career in millwork. Outside of work, he was an avid gardener—famous for growing the best corn around—and enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and spending time at the beach with his family every summer. One of his greatest joys was watching his grandchildren grow up and excel in sports.
A selfless and giving man, Joel was especially proud of his lifelong commitment to the American Red Cross, donating over 300 gallons of platelets to help those in need.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Nancy Deese Cochrane; his son, Jason Douglas Cochrane (Danielle); and his cherished grandchildren, Paige Alexandria Cochrane, Jackson Douglas Cochrane, and siblings Nell Cochrane Henderson and Ken (Linda) Cochrane. He was preceded in death by Ralph Cochrane, Paul Cochrane, Patsy Cochrane Sharpe, Joyce Cochrane Cabiness and Judy Cochrane.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Joel’s hospice team at Via Health Partners for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Harmony Baptist Church Matthews or Via Health Partners at PO Box 470408, Charlotte, NC 28247, or online at donatehospice.org.
