Karen Eileen Leaton

Karen was a resident of Mint Hill, North Carolina. She served her country with honor as an officer in the United States Navy, where she worked as a nurse on the Oncology unit and in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health. Her career reflected a deep commitment to service, compassion, and excellence in caring for others.

Karen was a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, Richard Leaton; her oldest daughter, Cynthia Leaton, and Cynthia’s husband, Yohan Rosario; her son, Benjamin Leaton; and her youngest daughter, Allyssa Leaton.

She loved all sports, but her heart never strayed far from her roots—she was a lifelong and passionate fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, cheering them on with pride and loyalty.

Karen was the heart of our family. She loved us fiercely, taught us by example, and stood beside us with strength and grace. Though we will miss her beyond words, her love, values, and spirit live on in each of us, every day.

In lieu of flowers, we request that memorial contributions be made to the Amyloidosis Research Consortium (ARC) in memory of Karen. During her 30-year career as an Oncology Certified Nurse, Karen was deeply devoted to her patients and their care, both within and beyond the clinical setting. After being diagnosed with AL amyloidosis in October, she came to understand the global lack of awareness and research surrounding it. Supporting research to advance earlier diagnosis and more effective, refined treatments would have meant a great deal to her.

In recognition of her service to our country, the United States Navy Honor Guard rendered military honors for Karen Leaton at her memorial gathering.
