I had the privilege of being Kayla’s teacher for many years.  During our lessons, Kayla served her community by baking cookies for soldiers; packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child; donating to Toys for Tots; and making baked spaghetti for men served in the CARITAS program.  She performed science experiments and participated in social studies lessons.  Although we never left her home, Kayla visited many countries around the world through her iPad.  Kayla loved music and along the way, we discovered  her love of Bruno Mars.  One day we created a Bruno Mars poster and with Trevor’s help sent a snapchat to Bruno.  Her Mom, Mrs. Martha, Kayla, and I danced to many songs.  It was always exciting when Kayla would move her arms up and down.  No matter what materials we needed, Kayla’s mom always had them waiting in our ‘school area’ when I arrived.  Her mom was her greatest advocate and always made sure she had the services and equipment she needed to access her environment.  All students should have a mom like that.  During one lesson we discussed Veteran’s day so we made a card for her dad.  He got out his military jacket and we put it on Kayla.  Since she was a daddy’s girl this was a very proud moment for them both.  Many of the memorable parts of working with Kayla centered around the times when Trevor was home.  Kayla and Trevor shared a special bond that only a sister and brother can share.  When she saw him she immediately showed her excitement by the way she looked at him.  The way he teased her when she was sleepy was so sweet.  What amazing parents Kayla had that from the beginning they fostered this bond.  Throughout our years together, Kayla taught me more than I could have ever taught her.  She taught me to embrace the life you have been granted and no matter what, always do your best.  Kayla was blessed to have a family that loved and supported her through every success and  setback of her life.  And, we were all blessed to have Kayla in our lives.

It has been my pleasure to have known Ms. Kayla Johnson and her family, it's never easy saying good bye. On behalf of Welcome Home Care, I would like to thank the Johnson family for allowing our staff to be a part of your family for the many years we've provided Nursing services to Kayla.

I pray that your hearts find peace in knowing that Kayla's time here on earth was filled with an abundance of love as she was surrounded daily by a loving family and care givers.
