Sue obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and History from University of North Carolina at Charlotte, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She went on to teach 2nd/3rd grade combined, followed by 5th grade, at Lebanon Road Elementary in Charlotte, NC. Her career was her passion and after much hard work, she received her National Board Certification. After teaching for seven years, she was declared permanently disabled with Fibromyalgia and had to step away from her job as an educator, but she never lost her teaching spirit.
Her physical limitations were great but her love of family was greater as she would often mask her pain to make new memories with them. Her husband and daughter were the lights of her life and considered them both her best friends and to them, she was their angel on earth.
She was a fervent believer in Christ and would share His love not only by her words, but through her actions. Her many illnesses prevented her from attending regularly, but she considered Mount Harmony her church home and was always glad to see friendly faces when she was able to go.
She is survived by her parents, Clyde Mason and Mirriam Lois Thomas, her loving husband of almost 40 years, Mitchell Alan Hooks, and her daughter, Mirriam Nicole Hooks, all of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by her brother Mason Lamar Thomas (Cynthia Gaither Thomas), of Valley, AL.
A visitation with the family will be held from 12:30-1:30pm on Monday, June 12, 2017 at Mount Harmony Baptist Church in Matthews. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation.
Burial will take place in Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to breast cancer research or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
