Peter Edward Ogint of Matthews, North Carolina passed on April 2, 2026 at 76 years old. He began his journey as a city kid in Cleveland, Ohio March 8, 1950. At eight years old he moved to Little Punderson in Newbury, Ohio where he enjoyed swimming in the lake and playing football and basketball in school. He went on to graduate from Newbury High School in 1968 and later attended Malone College and Kent State University. He eventually left Ohio for North Carolina in 1988 where he remained until his death.
Pete leaves behind his wife, Sandy, of 46 years, his daughter Vanessa and son-in-law Jay, and his little dog Looey. He will be missed by his brother Paul (Kathy), many nieces, nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law, and the community of friends he built over his lifetime. He is preceded in death by his parents Pete and Gloria and brother Ramon.
Always the athlete, Pete remained active throughout his life, taking up bowling, power walking, golf, and eventually settling on billiards in his later years. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed following THE Ohio State University, Cleveland’s teams (Browns, Cavaliers, and Indians), and Charlotte’s teams (Panthers and Hornets). He loved reading Westerns, mysteries, thrillers, and best sellers in large print from the local library or on his trusty Kindle. Pete and Sandy enjoyed gardening together – building flower beds from plants rescued from an abandoned nursery at their first home in Charlotte and bringing many of those plants with them to their home in Matthews. They also enjoyed traveling – from the Redwoods in California to the coasts of the Carolinas to the beaches of the Caribbean to New Zealand.
Pete will be remembered for his BIG personality and even bigger heart. He knew how to make everyone feel welcome – often using sarcasm to disarm and put others at ease. He never shied away from a good time and was notorious for calling for tequila shots (be it mid-pool game or before the father-daughter dance at Vanessa’s wedding). His friend, Ross, said it best, “Pete sure enjoyed his life and everyone who knew him enjoyed Pete.” Pete, the big softie he was, spent years helping both Sandy and Vanessa in their animal rescue endeavors. Becoming foster dad to countless cats and dogs and permanent dad to quite a few foster failures. Last, but certainly not least, Pete loved his daughter and was her biggest supporter – proudly sharing her (and in later years her dogs’) accomplishments with all who would listen.
To say Pete will be missed would be an understatement, he meant the world to his family and friends. However, he would not want anyone to dwell in sadness, he would want us to live life to the fullest – drink the beer, take the trip, shoot your shot.
In memory of Pete, please consider making a donation to an animal rescue of your choice in his name. Honoring Pete’s wishes, there is no planned funeral service. If a celebration of life is planned later this year, family and friends will be notified.
We love you, Big Guy!
