

Robert Houser Self lived a life defined by dedication, intelligence, and unwavering kindness. Born on September 18, 1941, he built a legacy of hard work, wisdom, and compassion that touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A proud graduate of Southern High School in Durham, North Carolina, Class of 1959, Robert pursued higher education at North Carolina State University, where he earned his degree in 1973. His commitment to excellence led him to obtain his Professional Engineer License in 1974, and he later became a registered land surveyor in both North Carolina and South Carolina. His passion for his profession inspired him to establish and successfully run his own Civil Engineering and Land surveying company from 1985 to 2015, a remarkable 30-year endeavor that showcased his dedication and expertise.
Robert was a faithful and devoted member of St. Michael's Anglican Church in Matthews, North Carolina, where his presence brought warmth and wisdom to those around him. He found joy in fishing, spending time with family and friends, and embracing the simple pleasures of life. Known for his patience, kindness, intelligence, and compassion, he approached each interaction with grace and understanding, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he met.
Above all, Robert will be remembered most for his unwavering compassion and patience with others, as well as his tireless dedication to his work and family. His legacy is one of integrity, resilience, and a deep love for those around him.
Robert’s memory will forever be cherished by his loved ones, and his influence will live on in the countless lives he touched.
His is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth Hawkins Self; children, Reed Self, Allison Hill, and Roy Houser Self II; grandchildren, Cami Self, Sierra Self, Carson Self, Hannah Self, Rebecca Self, Tristan Hill, and Preston Hill; and siblings, Billy Self and Margaret Bowden. Predeceased by his parents, Roy Houser Self and Louise Murrell Self of Durham, North Carolina; and sister, Janet Self of Norfolk, Virginia.
A memorial mass for Robert will be held Friday, May 30, 2025 at 1:00 PM at St. Michael's Anglican Church, 2211 Margaret Wallace Road, Matthews, North Carolina 28105.
