Dale was born July 8, 1940, in Cincinnati, OH, but moved to Birmingham, Alabama at the age of 2, where his father became Senior Pastor of Sixth Avenue Presbyterian Church. There, Dale attended Ramsay High School before continuing his education at Princeton University, graduating in 1962. During his time at Princeton, Dale served as President of Campus Club and rowed Stroke for Princeton’s 8-man heavyweight varsity crew team.
After graduating from Princeton, Dale taught History at Cassady Private School in Oklahoma City, where he met the love of his life, Margaret (Peg) Nutt, a 1st grade teacher at nearby Susquehanna Elementary School.
Dale proposed to Peg in 1963 on Christmas Eve in Birmingham, Alabama, following an arduous, multi-state train journey through a wild winter storm that crippled much of the South. Dale and Peg wed in Oklahoma City on June 18, 1964.
Dale went on to work for his alma mater, Princeton University, in the Admissions office, while earning his Ed.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University and – following a 3-year stint as an administrator at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA – moved his family (now with 3 small children) to Allentown, PA, where Dale served as Dean of Students, and later as Dean of Continuing Education, at Muhlenberg College for 25 years. Dale was also an Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Allentown.
Dale and Peg later moved to Matthews, NC, where Dale took on a role as development officer for the Presbyterian Church (USA) Foundation. He was an active member of Sardis Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, as well as The Rotary Club of Charlotte. He was deeply engaged in his community and generously shared his knowledge and enthusiasm with others. After retiring, one of his great joys was heading the Matthews Glen Library Board and founding and teaching the weekly “Historians Alive” class, where Dale continued to foster his life-long love of history, intellectual curiosity, and community.
Dale’s hobbies included reading, playing golf, running, cheering on his beloved Phillies and Eagles, and – above all – spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Peg; his three children, Melinda (the late Jeffrey Nydick), Andy (Leslie), and Scott (Caroline); and his two grandchildren, Olivia and Lila.
Dale will be remembered for his sharp intellect, kindness and integrity, for his love of discovery through reading, and for his unwavering dedication to his family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270, on April 11, 2026, at 1:00 pm. Everyone is invited for a reception immediately following the service.
