

He was born on January 5, 1937, in Miami, Florida to the late William Luther and Pearl Shelnutt.
He was preceded in death by his brother. Billy Shelnutt, brother, Bobby Shelnutt, sister, Beverly Stewart, nephews, Marlon Harris and Steve Shelnutt and great granddaughter Everly Hubbard.
Barry proudly served in the United States Air Force for 4 years, from June 25, 1956 to May 6, 1960, as a radio operator. He later worked at Publix Warehouse in Hollywood Florida, before retiring from the City of Lake Worth where he was a groundskeeper for the golf course.
In 1984, at the age of 47, Barry accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior after hearing a sermon from Billy Graham. This moment had a profound impact on his life, and he dedicated himself to serving others and spreading the gospel.
In 1998, Barry moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee to be closer to his family. He became a beloved volunteer, spending every week visiting nursing homes and assisted living facilities, including Morning Pointe, Life Care, and Elmcroft.
Known as “DJ Barry,” he was a popular figure among the residents, entertaining them with Billy Graham videos, bingo games, and his love of music, particularly Elvis and the Gaither Vocal Trio.
Barry is survived by his son, Chris (Shelly) Shelnutt; his grandchildren, Julianne (Tommy) Hubbard, Kristen (Chris) McArthur; and his great grandson, Logan. He is also survived by his nieces, Tammy Harris, Rebecca Harris, Cindie Wilding, Mary Shelnutt Schooley, Suzy Shelnutt Maher, Pam Vansickler; and his nephews, Ricky Ray, Kevin Shelnutt and Jim Shelnutt.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025, from 5:45 to 6:30 at Eastwood Church 4300 Ooltewah Ringgold Rd, Ooltewah, TN 37363. The celebration of life service will follow at 6:30pm with Pastor Sean Hanzelik officiating.
A graveside committal service with U.S. Air Force honors will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025, at 10:30 AM in the Chattanooga National Cemetery, 1200 Bailey Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37404.
