Born in Geneva, New York, to George and Jean Barton, Phyllis possessed an adventurous spirit from her earliest days. Family lore fondly recalls a three-year-old Phyllis wandering off on an unauthorized expedition, only to be escorted home in the sidecar of a police officer's motorcycle but not before the officer treated her to an ice cream cone. That thirst for exploration never faded, she and her husband Arthur Herman, traveled the globe together. Phyllis’ passion for travel and adventure continued until just one month before her passing.
A woman of deep faith and craftsmanship, Phyllis was a devoted member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church on Signal Mountain. She was a fixture at the church’s Thrift Store and dedicated her time to numerous projects serving the community. When she wasn't serving others, Phyllis could often be found at her sewing machine. An accomplished seamstress, she took great joy in creating custom clothing for herself and her loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of handmade care.
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, Art Herman; her son, Sean Lankford; and her sister, Judy Barton DeGelleke.
Phyllis will be remembered and cherished by her extensive family: daughter, Margot Herman Benn (Bobby) and granddaughter, Evalyn; stepson, Michael Herman (Lisa) and grandchildren, Arianna and Ethan; daughter-in-law, Erin Lankford and grandsons, Andrew (Trisha) and Hunter; and her great-granddaughter, Audrey. She also leaves behind her brothers, Ted and Jesse Barton; her sister, Anita Barton-Schmidt; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Phyllis’s life will be held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, April 26, at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Timothy’s Food Pantry (https://sttimothysignal.org/how-we-serve/st-isidores-ministries/). A live stream of the service is available at https://sttimothysignal.org/live-stream/
