

William Arthur Dalton passed on May 8, 2026, at the age of 84, and was a resident of Collegedale, Tennessee. Born in Copperhill, TN, November 18, 1941 to Nettie E. Ratcliff and Arthur L. Dalton. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, sister June Dalton Hyde and a half sister, Geraldine Dalton. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charleston “Charlie Mayfield” Dalton, daughter Pamela L. Dalton of Chattanooga, TN, sister Amelia McCelland (Joseph), three nieces Robbie Hyde Callahan, Mandi Pavich, Cyndi Lindholm, one nephew Timothy McClelland, numerous great nieces and nephews.
Bill graduated from Young Harris College and went on to attend Middle TN State in Murfreesboro, TN, met and married Charleston Mayfield in Birmingham, AL, 1963 and the rest is history.
Bill was a man of faith, a member of First Baptist of McCaysville-Copperhill. He loved his hometown and serves as a member of the Planning Commission until present day. Work took him to Chattanooga in 1969, working for Brock Candy Company which led to working for Senator Bill Brock at the Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C. This led to numerous opportunities with many national public figures and many celebrities; such as Bob Hope, Elizbeth Taylor, and many more.
He was sent by Sec. of State James Baker to outer Mongolia to teach them election protocol after the fall of the Soviet Union. His stories were fascinating. He also collected & studied hundreds of World War II history books, collaborating with Stephen Ambrose on the World War II Historical Museum in New Orleans, LA. He wrote and planned a 50th anniversary commemorating D-Day and the invasion of Normandy, France.
He and Charleston traveled to many countries for many years. His and Charlie’s travel could be a travel guide if published.
A Committal Service will be held at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church, 7500 Roper Rd, Trussville, AL 35173, US, on May 12, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
