Bellos recuerdos…wonderful memories…Don Miguel, you will be greatly missed!!!

Some of my favorite memories of Abuelito were when he visited us in South Carolina. He always made sure we were well fed, making his famous tortillas de harina, which we all loved. He had the best stories and jokes, always making us laugh. I remember how he would sometimes give our dogs salchichas when they were hungry. He always made sure everyone was taken care of, even our dogs. I’m going to miss Abuelito, and I’ll always hold onto the memories and time spent with him.

My fondest memories of mi Abuelito were cooking and eating with him. I remember when he made me pancakes with syrup for my birthday and when he would pack me tortillas with peanut butter before my soccer games in elementary school. He always made sure that I was well fed and poured kindness into his every actions, especially his cooking. His food will be missed and the memories of times with him even more.

The work of memory collapses time. I’d say that’s why it feels like just yesterday that I was being awoken by the smell of pancakes filling my abuelitos house. In fact, till this very day, every time I eat a pancake I always say to myself that I wish they tasted like how they did when my abuelito and abuelita made them for me and my sister, the cinnamon and the honey bear both in the back of my mind. 

So many memories of my grandparents begin to flow in, when I think about my early childhood. The way my abuelita would always be the one to come out to tell us to go to bed when we were making too much noise during our sleepover, the way they let us take apart all the couches to build forts with the cushions, the way I’d sneak around them to go into tio Mikes room to rummage through his art supplies, the way they always let us help with the cooking. I’m grateful for every second. 

I’m proud to be the granddaughter of such a resilient and strong, hardworking man. I still have the faint memory of hearing him get up in the early hours of the morning to start his day. Strong until his last breathe- we’d laugh together with my dad about how his teeth were still holding up so greatly at such a mature age, that they could easily bite down on those hard chicharrónes from the grocery store, that even I had trouble chewing.

I’m very fortunate to have gotten the chance to experience my favorite theater and my favorite barbecue spot with him, a few things that he probably wasn’t given the proper chance to enjoy during his adolescent years. I’ll always cherish the moments in the summer when me, my sister, abuelito, and the dogs would go have lunch together and eat at the park.   

Although grief is said to be the last and final translation of love, It’s also proof that we once loved. I’ll be sure to continue living life with abuelito in my heart- a preservation of how much I loved and still love him.

While I will miss my abuelito and the countless stories he told, I can’t help but feel that he always took such good care of me. From the moment I was born, my abuelito took care of me and my mom. He always had little sayings, and even when he wasn’t feeling his best, he remained positive, saying he felt como “navaja.”

When I learned of his passing, it struck me that even in his absence, he was still watching over me. The night he passed, my brother Rafael and I had gone to the gym. On our way home around midnight, a car ran a red light, speeding at about 70 mph. We were just a foot away from what could’ve been a tragic accident. In that moment, I truly believe my abuelito was still taking care of us.

It is truly heartwarming to know that God has brought my abuelito and abuelita back together in heaven, allowing us all to gain one more guardian angel. Although I wish I had more memories with him, what will live on forever is his delicious tortillas de harina recipe. I thank God for my abuelitos because, without them, my family would not be here.

Don Miguel, as I always called him, will be deeply missed. May he rest in peace. I had the privilege of knowing this wonderful person for almost 30 years, and I have nothing but fond memories of him. He was always eager to help me when my eldest, Jacqui, was a newborn—she loved her abuelito so much!

Don Miguel had a deep passion for children, pets, and his ranch in Mexico. He truly loved his family and always enjoyed sharing his life experiences and memoirs. Around little ones, he would even engage in baby talk, bringing joy to those around him. Though my other child did not have the opportunity to spend as much time with his grandfather, he carries the family name, Rafael, and cherishes the memories he has of his abuelito Campos in his heart.

My deepest condolences to the entire Campos family.
