What is your only comfort in life and in death?
That I am not my own, but belong, body and soul, both in life and in death, to my faithful Saviour, Jesus Christ.
We mourn, but not without hope, as we remember the passing of our beloved husband, dad, Pake, uncle, and brother, Charles (Charlie) Wynia.
Charlie was born on October 15, 1955, in Fort Macleod, Alberta, and spent his childhood in Granum, Alberta. When he was 17, his family and their cows moved over the mountains to begin farming in Agassiz. It was there that he met his wife, Leona, and they were married on January 12, 1978. They chose a winter wedding because winter was the off-season for farming.
After the passing of Leona’s dad, Charlie and Leona took over the family farm on Tuyttens Road in Agassiz. Together, they built a life rooted in family and faith.
In 2005, they sold the farm and retired to Chilliwack, where they settled into a home overlooking the mountains and river. Charlie enjoyed this next chapter of life to the fullest. He loved growing beautiful flowers, spending time in the bunker building things for his family, and cheering on his favourite sports teams—a love of sports he shared with his son. He also spent many happy hours on his deck, taking in the view he loved so much.
Charlie will be remembered for his one-liners and wonderful sense of humour. He loved sports, old westerns, good company, and travelling with good friends. Above all, he was a man of faith. His love for God was the quiet, steady foundation of his daily life.
For 48 years, Charlie was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Leona. Together, they raised three wonderful children and were abundantly blessed with five grandboys, who were the joy of his life. He loved playing games with them, always following Pake’s rules!
Charlie leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Leona; his children, Shanna (Phil), Justin, and Nikki (Hans); and his five cherished grandboys, Liam, Emerson, Reid, Mason, and Declan.
He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings, John (Carol), Betty (Ed), Shirley (George), and Nancy; as well as his sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and Beppe.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Jake and Tettje; his nephew, Tyler; his father-in-law, Bert; his brothers-in-law, Jim, Pete, and Geoff; and his sister-in-law, Linda.
The family would like to thank everyone for their love and support over the past few months. We are truly grateful and feel blessed by the kindness shown to us during this difficult time.
A heartfelt thank-you goes to all the medical staff in the ICU at ARHCC and CGH, Dr. Salter, and Tracey Stoneson for their care, compassion, and support.
Though we grieve his passing, we do so with hope and the comfort of knowing that Charlie belonged to his faithful Saviour, Jesus Christ, in life and in death. His faith, his love for his family, and the many memories he leaves behind will continue to be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
