On Thursday, July 17, 2025, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family in his San Diego home, Edilberto A. Farinas passed away at the age of 85. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a loving brother, a loyal friend, a caring neighbor, Edilberto leaves behind a legacy defined by love, loyalty, and quiet strength.
Edilberto shared 47 joyful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Pavia, and was a steadfast presence in the lives of their children—Abigail, Eddie Jr., and Tanya. His unconventional wisdom and unwavering support made him the foundation of his family, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
Born in Palauig, Zambales, Philippines on May 12, 1940, to Pedro and Ines Farinas, Edilberto was one of nine siblings. Some of his fondest memories were his early days spent fishing out at sea with his father and brothers, learning the values of hard work, patience, and perseverance.
He pursued higher education at Columban College in Olongapo City, studying Business and Accountancy, but his path soon led him toward service. In July 1965, with the encouragement of his brother Manuel, Edilberto joined the United States Navy. Over the course of two decades, he served with distinction as a mess cook aboard the USS Guadalcanal, USS Truxtun, and USS Horne. Revered by his shipmates as a confidant and protector—an older brother in spirit—he earned several commendations for outstanding conduct and commitment. During his service, he regularly sent money home to his parents in the Philippines to help with expenses and send his younger siblings to college. Edilberto retired in 1985 as Petty Officer First Class, proud of his 20 years of dedicated military service.
After his naval career, Edilberto turned his attention to his growing family, embracing the role of caregiver and was the strong presence in their everyday lives. In 1987, he began a new chapter at the United States Post Office, where he worked until his retirement in 2007. True to his nature, retirement wasn’t a slowing down but a deepening of connection—he spent his time caring for his loved ones, including his mother-in-law, Marcosa Reyes, and continued to brighten gatherings with his humor and playful spirit.
A man of simple pleasures and generous heart, Edilberto found joy in card games-especially poker, sharing laughter, and cooking meals that brought people together—his signature Thanksgiving turkey and stuffing, steaks, adobo, and dinuguan were legendary among those lucky enough to sit at his table.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Ines Farinas, and siblings Rosamunda Tuliao, Felixnino Farinas, Manuel Farinas, Gavina Rodin, and Pedrito Farinas Jr. He is survived by siblings Faye Castillo, Sally Farinas, and Benito Farinas; his cherished wife, Pavia; his children, Abigail Guzman (Luis), Edilberto Farinas Jr., Tanya Butera (Christopher), and Florence Esmele; and his grandchildren, Noah Farinas and Xavier Guzman.
Edilberto’s legacy lives on in every life he touched—with his bold humor, his tireless devotion, and the unwavering love he gave so freely. He will be remembered always and missed profoundly.
