born on December 23, 1961 in West Helena, Arkansas to Roosevelt and Arzola Barnes at Helena
Hospital. His father was a man of all trades, but he put food on the table with his job in
manufacturing. His mother was a nurse and a homemaker. At the age of 6, they relocated to
Boston, Massachusetts for five years and eventually moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he
and his sibling spent the rest of their adolescence.
Hubert went to Rufus King and changed schools to Pulaski High School where he graduated in
1980. He achieved a high GPA to maintain his spot on the school's honor roll. He loved outside
activities like playing football and basketball, but also joined many social clubs and learned to
play the drums. In his spare time, he would listen to music and read comic books. He worked at
several establishments and realized he wanted to take that next step in his life, so he enlisted in
the United States Army. During deployment, he was in an unfortunate accident when the humvee
flipped, bruising his collar bone, breaking his arm and his leg which caused a lifetime of
complications. Afterwards, he was honorably discharged.
In the course of finding a new profession, he held a multitude of jobs. One day he decided he
wanted a change of life and relocated to San Diego where his mother and siblings lived. After a
while, he became a member of the Men's Ministry in San Diego and finally joined his last church
home at Grace Unity. Hubert knew he had a calling from the lord and devoted his life to Christ.
This led him to complete his certificate at the Laymen’s School of Ministry in 2007. He joined
the prison ministry to help inmates when they were struggling the most. Before his passing, he
was working on purchasing a home to create a transitional home for people who were previously
incarcerated. He was always known for having a big heart and giving whatever he could to
people, especially children. Hubert constantly volunteered and donated, particularly to the
Abandoned Baby Center helping over 36 children. In 2008, Hubert received his Associate in
Heating and Air Conditioning. His last job before retirement was working for the Veterans
Affairs (VA).
He is survived by his mother, Arzola Barnes of Chula Vista; Siblings, Ronnie Barnes and
Melony (Kenneth) Landrum; Children, Alicia, Minevia, Angel, Thomas; 15 grandchildren; a few
nephews and a multitude of nieces; several great nieces and nephews.
