Ida grew up in Detroit, graduating from Cass technical High School and Grace Hospital Nursing School. In 1942 she married William George Windress, who had grown up across the street from her, and they had four daughters together - Louise, Elizabeth, Barbara, and Kathleen. Bill's career in the Navy moved the family from Detroit to Newfoundland and Norfolk, Virginia, before settling in San Diego County in 1953. Ida worked as a nurse in a physician's office for many years and was an accomplished seamstress. Her outside activities included Lakeside Garden Club, Lakeside Historical Society, and St. John's Lutheran Church in El Cajon.
Ida was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2002. She lived her final years at LoHar Gardens in El Cajon. Her family is deeply grateful to all of the staff at LoHar for loving Ida and taking such good care of her. She died there peacefully on Friday, February 17, with four members of the staff at her bedside.
Ida was preceded in death by her husband, William, her daughters Louise and Kathleen, her parents, her brother, George, and her twin sisters, Margaret Dove and Barbara Behm. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Ditlefsen and Barbara (Roger) Hartup, her grandchildren Ed (Tami), Erik and Aaron Ditlefsen, Jeff (Tori) and Lisa Christiansen, and great grandchildren Audrey and Laurelyn Ditlefsen and Cooper Christiansen.
