Rick has always been a man of many interests. He was curious about the world around him. He was drawn to dinosaurs (especially Godzilla), understanding ancient scriptures, and the universe itself. Throughout his upbringing, Rick was known for the occasional late-night “sneak out” to find trouble and fun in his 1965 Impala. He truly lived for the suspense. He also found joy in gaming, especially on PlayStation systems, where he loved his racing games, or sci-fi stories.
At the age of 18, Rick proudly began his service in the United States Navy, where he served for 10 years. After completing his active-duty service, he continued his commitment to his country by transitioning into a civilian career with the Navy Department of Defense, dedicating an additional 27 years in service. Rick loved his job and his coworkers. He always got his work done on time, while making everyone laugh while doing it (including himself).
His most loved hobby was building models of cars, battleships, and everything in between. Rick was extremely detail-oriented and a perfectionist, that reflected well into his craftmanship. His love for building cars carried over into adulthood where he became a self-taught mechanic and built his own modified cars. He frequently was always seen driving bright red Mitsubishi cars, such as 1987 Starion or 1995 3000GT. He truly had an affinity for automotive artistry.
Rick was a devoted husband, marrying his Wife, Marlene, in October of 1996. He had two loving daughters, Mileena and Samantha, that he always supported. He was a gentle caretaker to the animals he cherished, especially his cats. His love was shown not through grand gestures, but through his dependability, acts of service, and the countless ways he showed up for those he cared about. He also carried a strong sense of loyalty to those he loved, especially his sister, Jeannie, whom he quietly protected. It was a role he took to heart without ever needing recognition or words.
Rick always knew he was a star, as his “RIXSTAR” license plate on his Starion proved it. He always appeared to be stoic, but to his family and close friends, he was a man of immense warmth and a playful spirit. He was a devoted brother and son, a loving husband, a caring father, and a friend to many. He touched the lives of countless individuals with his antics. He will be deeply and forever missed.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene Espinoza Abano; his cherished daughters, Mileena Rae Abano and Samantha Espinoza Abano; his mother, Beverly Jane Jones; and his sister, Jeannie Baker Abano.
