Virginia A Stearns

She was born and grew up in Jacksonville, FL on December 24, 1920. She married Hoyt Arthur Stearns on June 17, 1941. She spent the first few years of their married life in Washington DC during World War ll, where her husband was employed as a civilian scientist with the Naval Ordinance Laboratory. They subsequently lived in Cleveland, Ohio; Chappaqua, New York; Marin County, California; Arcadia, California; and finally moved to San Diego in 1974. Her beloved Hoyt passed on in January 18, 2013 at age 96. The two had been married for 72 years. Virginia lived for a while with her son Elliott and his wife, Johanna; and subsequently at the Wesley Palms Retirement Community and then the Cloisters of the Valley assisted living facility in the Mission Valley area of San Diego.

Virginia was active in service to the Episcopal Church throughout her long life and was married at The Church of the Good Shepherd in Jacksonville, Florida where she taught Sunday school. As she and Hoyt moved, they both continued their association with, and service to, the Episcopal churches they attended. In San Diego, Virginia was a part of the Daughters-of-the-King organization whose members were pledged to "a life-long program of prayer, service and evangelism [and received] support in this years as a member of St. James's Altar Guild, was a member of the Social Service League of La Jolla, St. Germaine Auxiliary, the Country Friends, and the National Society of Colonia Dames of America.

Virginia is survived by her three sons, Hoyt Stearns, Jr. of Phoenix, AZ; Frederick Stearns of San Diego, CA and Elliott Stearns III of San Diego. She has three granddaughters, Catherine Rose Stearns, Helen Regina Stearns, and Anna Theresa Stearns who are the children of her son Elliott and his wife Johanna.

A memorial service and internment of ashes followed by a reception and time for sharing remembrances of Virginia will be held at 11 AM on April 1st, 2017 at St. James by the Sea Episcopal Church, located at 743 Prospect St. La Jolla, CA 92037.
