October 17, 1937 - February 24, 2012
Jake was born in Springfield, Illinois on October 17, 1937 to Christian and Margaret Jacobsen. He was one of five children. He passed away at home on February 24, 2012 .
He joined the US Navy in 1955 and served as an aircraft engine mechanic aboard the USS Lexington while stationed in San Diego. After an honorable discharge he settled in the San Diego area and began a distinguished 35 year career with the San Diego Police Department. He retired as a Detective Sergeant in 1993. He is survived by Janice Jacobsen, his wife of 34 years and his sons, Richard (Sue) Jacobsen, of Denver, Colorado, Jason (Tina) Smith of Coral Springs, Florida, and Jared Jacobsen of San Diego, California, five grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffery Jacobsen.
He coached all of his sons' little league baseball teams. He enjoyed camping activities in his motor home, loved to read and solve crossword puzzles. His door was always open and enjoyed hosting large family gatherings.
Those who knew Jake were aware of the difficulties and seemingly insurmountable hurdles he endured over the last twenty years. His courage and defiance in the face of a liver transplant, open heart surgery and renal failure were apparent throughout his final battle with cancer. His will to live and desire to be with his family will forever leave a lasting impression on those closest to him.
Whether you knew him as William, Jake, Dad, Honey, Grandpa, or Friend be assured that he is now in peace and will continue watching over his family as he did when he was alive. He will be missed, loved always and never forgotten.
There will a Celebration of Life in his Chula Vista home on Saturday, 3/3/12, 1PM-4PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
