We were blessed to have Sue Sam Wong Mar in our lives until she was, quickly and without suffering, called Home. A devout Christian, soft-spoken, sweet, and always loving to all who knew her – except, for those who dared to criticize any of her children or grandchildren. Raised by her maternal grandmother in China & Hong Kong, armed with just a high school education, she and husband John Mar shared five children (Yen, Cedric, Julie, Tom, and Geny). Widowed at 39 years old, Sue Sam chose to carry the weight of her small world as a single mother with complete faith in the Lord, steadfast determination, amazing grace, and sage wisdom. Her nine grandkids (Kimberly, Christopher, Sydney, Rebekkah, Jonathan, Jamison, Sarah, Jake, and Jackson) benefitted from her love, calm, and gentleness, and gravitated to her side whenever near. From afar, they can be comforted by the blankets and scarves she made for them, or from the bit of spending money that she would tuck into a lucky red envelope, and not just on special occasions. She had once expressed that “if one can take care of five, five can take care of one.” Through the years, her kids and their spouses, her grandkids, and her four siblings (Diana, Nat, Ben, and Paula) happily took the challenge and made sure she felt happy, safe, loved, and never alone (not even on March 12, 2018).
A Celebration of Sue Sam’s life and Memorial Service will take place at 10:00am – 11:30am on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at the Chapel of Woodlawn Memorial Park & Funeral Home. Directions and flower orders may be found at this link.
