She was born on April 4, 1935 in Greenville Florida to Louis and Daisy Davis Cone.
Evelyn grew up in Florida and met the love of her life J.W. Slater, whom she married in Tampa on December 13, 1952. After her marriage they moved to the Colorado City area where they settled down in 1955 making it their life-long residence. Evelyn had a passion for knowledge and a passion for books. This passion led her to her favorite job as a librarian for Western Texas College, as well as to volunteering at the First Baptist Church of Colorado City as their Librarian. Her love of words quickly made her known to others as a Queen of grammar. Evelyn always had a strong will to persevere through any situation, which helped her to be a cancer survivor of 55 years. She was a woman of faith and a woman who loved and cherished her family, so much so that she retired from her job to spend as much time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her spare time Evelyn ran the Circle Six Ranch Baptist Encampment and enjoyed sewing.
Evelyn is survived by her husband of 63 years J.W. “Doc” Slater, her son J.D. Slater and wife Pam of Haslet, a daughter Rhonda Roark and husband Steve of Colorado City, and by her grandchildren Colby Slater and wife Jody of Abilene, Dylan Slater of Colorado City, Nathan Slater and wife Stacy of Colorado City, Amanda Murray of Ft. Worth, Kristin Libbey of Haslet, and Kayla Luera and husband Richard of Colorado City. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren Ayden Slater, Paxton Slater, and Richard Luera the third. Also surviving are her sister Carol Kulesco and husband Ron of Athena Alabama, and her four-legged child Precious Mei-Ling Slater.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Linda Flatley and her husband Doug, her sister Helen Johnson, and by her great-granddaughter Linda Michelle Luera.
A memorial service for Evelyn will be held on Thursday, March 10th at 2pm at the 1st Baptist Church of Colorado City with Dr. Jerry Shields officiating.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Circle 6 Ranch Baptist Camp in Stanton, TX as this was an organization that was near and dear to her heart.
