Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on May 10, 2022 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, followed by burial and military honors at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
A native of Danielson Connecticut, He was born August 22, 1948 to Helen and Nicholas Katsapis in Putnam, Connecticut.
George was a Soldier through and through. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served his country proudly for 20 plus years as an Infantryman and achieved his many goals. One of George’s greatest passions was teaching in Drill Sergeant School and various Military Exercises where he was able to share his expertise and guide young Soldiers to fight, have each other backs and survive in horrible conditions.
In November 1987, he retired from the Army and began to work for the State of South Carolina, Consolidated System Inc. and finally at the Forensic Hospital as a Security Officer.
Most importantly, George was a dedicated family man and loving husband who worked hard to provide for his family. He never knew a stranger always stopping and talking with anyone who was interested in all the things he loved. George was a dependable friend and will be remembered for his strong personality, compassionate and loving nature. He was always willing to lend a hand.
George loved to hunt, fish, golf and ride his motorcycle with the Backroad Cruise Family.
Those left to cherish him was his wife; Hildegard V. Katsapis of 42 years, his sister; Melanie Malcoon (Chuck), a son; Christopher Katsapis, a daughter; Tammie Morton (Tom), a grandson; Braden Shoupe, two granddaughters; Molly Shoupe, Morgan Katsapis, and his extended family on his wife’s side. He leaves behind two fur babies; Sadie and Tucker Katsapis.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to special friends, Mike Boynton and his wife, Freida Israel for their enduring friendship, support and comfort through George’s illness. To George’s many friends, we could never say thank you enough for your phone calls, visits and compassion.
Memorial contributions in George’s honor may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society or to the charity of one’s choice.
