

Al served for 20 years in the U.S. Army. He fought in Italy during World War II, where he was captured as a prisoner of war for 9 months in Stalg 7A in Germany. Al also fought in Korea. His many decorations included the Bronze Star, Purple Heart with Cluster, Combat Infantry Badge with star, and French Croix de Guerre.
He later served for 22 years as letter carrier with the Postal Service. Al was a dedicated golfer who founded Forest Lake Presbyterian Men’s Golf Group and Al’s Palmetto Golfers.
He was a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church since 1963 and served as Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, and teacher and many other ways. Al loved his Lord, his family, his country and his golf and served them all well.
Surviving are his daughter, Barbara Winkles (Dennis) of Denver NC, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Lois Hamilton.
A service of witness to the resurrection will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church with livestream at https://flpc.org/sundays/live-streaming/ To attend please call the church office at 803-787-5672. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Masks are required.
