Surrounded by prayers and love as she was during her 2 1/2 year battle with glioblastoma, Allison Harrill Corbett transitioned into new life on August 3, 2022 at home. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church 3600 Devine St on Monday, August 8, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel on Sunday, August 7, 2022 with a visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m.
Allison was born November 5, 1962 to Richard Durham Harrill and the late Kathryn Ross Harrill and raised in Pineville, N.C. then Gaffney, S. C. where her father founded the YMCA and Allison graduate from Gaffney High School in 1981. Education was always important to her family. Allison’s Mom was a devoted Special Ed. teacher for many years. Allison graduated from the College of Charleston in 1985 and served on its Alumni Board, worked for the Charleston County Museum and received an MPA from a joint program of USC and the College of Charleston. She moved to Columbia in 1988 and began her career in state government at the offices of Gov. Carol Campbell, Gov. David Beasley and Gov. Jim Hodges then transitioned to the State Transport Police, DMH and the Highway Patrol before finishing her working career under her mentor Dr. Fred Carter at Francis Marion University and retiring in 2012. She enjoyed family vacations at Pawley’s Island, Lake Murray, sailing, and her children’s activities.
Allison’s first love was her family. She is survived by her husband of 23 years James J. Corbett, son James Samuel (Sam) Corbett, daughter Katherine Grace (Kate) Corbett, and stepson Sean Corbett Nottoli, father Richard D. Harrill, brother Richard H. Harrill, sister in law Kathy Corbett, brothers in law Bob and Bernie Corbett, cousins, nieces and nephews and many friends. Allison won victories during her battle with brain cancer, including seeing Kate graduate from 6th Grade at St. Joseph Catholic School and Sam from Cardinal Newman HS.
The family is greatly indebted to so many who provided support and assistance, including friends Kathleen and Randy Herald, Peggy and Brian Binette, Don and Ben Hottel and family, Debbie and Allie Brown, Ann and Bob Nerbun and family, the Cardinal Newman School family, St. Joseph School family, Saint Joseph Catholic Church and its wonderful members, care giver Gail Perkins, Knights of Columbus Council 12554, St. Columba Division of the Order of Ancient Hibernians, the numerous and some unknown prayer warriors across the state, country and even the world praying for her led by her father Dick Harrill and his friend Colonel Roy Mathis, Faye and Furman Welchel, the great neighbors on and around Grace Hill Road, and especially the Cardinal Newman Baseball team family who provided meals, guidance, love and support from the onset to the end.
Support from friends and teammates of Sam’s on the Carolina Prospects, USC Sumter Fire Ants, and American Legion Richland Post 215, CN friends and classmates of Sam and Kate, and Kate’s Cardinal Newman basketball team players, coaches and families, greatly helped during this battle. The family appreciated the kind care from SC Oncology Associates especially Dr. Charles Butler, PA Ashley Miller, and staff, the staff at UCLA Cancer Center including Dr. Timothy Cloughesy, Dr. Robert Chong, Dr. Linda Liau, and the California Rehabilitation Institute.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Family Honor Inc., Birthright of Columbia, or a charity of one’s choice.
