
COLUMBIA - Anne Thomas Gilmore, 87, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2023. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of Frances Jennings Thomas and George Thomas. She received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of South Carolina and later a master’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Florida. Her love for chemistry landed her a long and rewarding career in teaching from Florida, Georgia, Spain, and back to Columbia, SC. Some of her fondest memories were made at Cardinal Newman High School. Upon her retirement at the age of 80, Cardinal Newman named the school’s new chemistry lab in her honor.
Anne loved the beach, Saturday morning yard sales, and solving puzzles of all kinds. She also enjoyed her weekly exercise and Bingo visits at the Lourie Center.
Surviving are her daughter, Sissy Gilmore Lentz (Paul); sons, Biff Gilmore (Karen), Drew Gilmore, Richard Gilmore (Karen), and Happy Gilmore; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Pat Humphries (Bob), nieces, nephews, and their families.
