Born on October 3, 1943, in Columbia, he was the son of Lloyd Hamiter and Gertrude Shealy Hamiter. He resided for most of his life at 1305 Haynesworth Road, but in recent years, had been a resident of Finlay House.
He graduated in 1961 from Dreher High School where he was a lineman on the varsity football team. As a youth, he was active in the Boy Scouts where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended the University of South Carolina.
Mr. Hamiter was employed for many years with the state government’s Division of General Services, serving as Supervisor of Custodial Services. Later, he worked in the life and health insurance business.
He is survived by his son, David L. Hamiter, II, of Lexington, and by his sister, Julie Edwina Hamiter McLeod, of Little Mountain; his nephew, Walton J. (Tad) McLeod, IV, of Columbia; two grand-nephews, Jay and Thomas McLeod; and grand-niece, Caroline McLeod.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Finlay House, 2100 Blossom Street, Columbia, SC 29205.
