David Wellsman Johnson, Jr., 72 died following a short illness on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. Born in Greenwood, SC, he was a son of the late David Wellsman Johnson and Hibernia Jeanette Lynch Johnson.
David is survived by his loving wife of forty-nine years, Julia Wells Snead Johnson, his three children, Libby Johnson Garlitz (Kyle), Wells Johnson (Addie), and Anna Mobley Johnson Moore (Chris). He was affectionally known as “Hanny” by his seven grandchildren, Jack Garlitz, Wellsman Johnson, Julia Garlitz, Virginia Johnson, Luke Garlitz, Owen Johnson, and Mary Garlitz. He considered them his greatest joy in life and loved to pass along his love of candy, especially circus peanuts and orange slices, ice cream and snacks on a daily basis. David is also survived by his four brothers and sisters, Linn Johnson, Marc Johnson (Sallie), Henry Johnson (Sharon), and Sue Johnson as well as his aunt, Mrs. William Woodard Johnson along with many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and many lifelong friends.
David was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corp having served in the Vietnam War in 1968-1969. He had a long career in the mortgage banking industry having worked at Aiken Spear in Florence, SC, Bankers Mortgage in Columbia, SC, and Bear Stearns in New York and Atlanta, Ga. David co-founded Resource Bancshares Mortgage Group with Ed Sebastian in 1989.
After retiring in 2000, he discovered a love of cars which grew from a hobby to the founding of his current companies, Midlands Auto Sales and Midlands Luxury Cars, Top Notch Automotive, and Augwood, Inc. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Wildewood Country Club and Biltmore Forest Country Club.
The family wishes to thank Dr. J. Frank Martin, Jr., Dr. Steven Minter, Dr. Greg Grabowski and Heart of Hospice for their loving care during David’s brief illness.
A private family service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street is assisting the family.
