He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Beth Culpepper Stillinger; four children, Selena Bradford (Joe), Guy Stillinger (Charay), Brook Deford, Tony Deford (Meghan); siblings, Ted Stillinger, Linda Culli (Ed), Lindy Epps; beloved in-laws, Robert Dickard (Martha Jo), Lynda Irby, Dianne Threat, Ricky Culpepper (Carla).
He also had nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as “The Legend”. They will miss his heartfelt devotion, long life talks, stories of “the mill hill”, The River Rats, walking to school seven miles barefoot in the snow (uphill both ways!), fishing tales, military stories and the big buck that got away or when he got two bucks with one shot. He provided this family with wisdom, love, advice, laughter and someone we all could admire and look up to.
His list of accomplishments is long. He was a proud armed service member, retiring from the U.S. Navy as Senior Chief after 20 years. He was there to encourage his two sons, grandson and nephew to serve our country. If anyone happens to go by the recruitment office in Columbia, S.C., you will see his signature on the wall. He went on to Civil Service rank GS13 for ten years, followed by a few business adventures after retirement.
He and Beth also loved to travel. He had many interests, history of all kinds, with a focus on the Civil War. He loved to go fishing, hunting, and followed sports and politics.
We will miss him as a constant in this life but find comfort in knowing that he is in heaven with our Lord and Savior. We will continue to lead by his example and celebrate his life.
