COLUMBIA - George Franklin Pettis, 87, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at his home. Born October 26, 1930 in Panama City, Florida, he was the son of the late William Ballard and Tempie Lee Clark Pettis.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wives, Marilyn Joyce Rogers Pettis and Carolyn Stevens Pettis and his siblings, Louise Graves, William Pettis and Floyd Pettis. Survivors include his daughter, Dianne Williams (John David); sons, Greg Pettis, Mike Pettis (Maria Valente) and Steve Pettis; grandchildren, David, Jamie, Danielle, Brian Michael, Jesse, Cole, Michael Gabriel, great-grandchildren, Jack, Zac, Kairi, and Mia; a sister, Bernice Pettis; brothers, Arthur Pettis and Billy Pettis; and longtime friend Peggy Heidel.
George was a faithful member of North Trenholm Baptist Church, where he was a member of the choir. He will be remembered for his deep love of Christ, family and music. George spent 26 honorable years between in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict and as an OSI and CID Investigator retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer. He also retired from Norris Associates as a Private Investigator.
Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, January 27, 2018 at North Trenholm Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Greenhaven Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Palmetto Health Senior Primary care and Agape Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in George's honor to the Special Olympics.
