Haskell was born July 21, 1943 in Columbia to the late Haskell Simpkins, Sr. and the late Alice Pearl Waites-Dunlap and John Sims.
When Haskell was living in Columbia, South Carolina he attended Columbia High School. Haskell moved to New York City in 1961 and has lived there for 60 years. He built his life in Brooklyn, New York. Haskell worked for the telephone company that is now called Verizon for over 20 years. He retired the telephone company in 1996. In 1986, he married Norma Gonzalez, and in 1989 they had their daughter Desiree Alice Burthey.
Haskell enjoyed fishing, relaxing and playing his lotto numbers. Over the years he suffered with arthritis and chronic heart failure. He lived his best and a good life.
In addition to his parents, Haskell is predeceased by his wife, Norma Simpkins. Survivors include his daughter, Desiree Burthey; grandchildren, Shakur and Saniya Burthey and family; his brothers, Trezevant Dunlap and family, Larry Dunlap and family, and Anthony Sims and family; and a host of cousins, nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
