
Jane Gower Hammond Jervey, 94, passed away on February 6, 2022 after a brief illness. She was born in Blackville, S.C. to the late Dr. Dunbar and Elizabeth West Hammond. She attended Mary Baldwin College in Stauton Virginia and graduated from the University of South Carolina, Magna cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa. She married Herbert V. Jervey shortly after graduation and worked briefly in teaching and publishing before stepping away to focus on raising her three children.
When her children were older, she returned to USC, completing a Masters degree in Spanish and pursuing courses toward a doctorate in Comparative literature. She taught Spanish and French at Eau Claire High School for 20 years then was an adjunct instructor of Spanish at Midlands Tech College for 14 years and then worked part-time as a translator.
Her studies led to her travels in France, Spain and Central America, as she polished her fluency in French and Spanish and enhanced her understanding of other cultures. She also participated in a number of Earthwatch trips, to pursue her interests in anthropology and history.
She also had lifelong passions for gardening and for wildlife. She took great pleasure in her yard and flowers and until the very end of her life, loved seeing and hearing about sightings of various birds and animals. She was deeply attached to her pets and also provided a temporary home over the years to other creatures, ranging from wildlife to re-homed Easter chickens.
She is survived by her three children: Dr. Catherine Jervey, of San Diego, CA, John V. Jervey, of Lexington, SC and Christopher H. Jervey of Columbia, SC and her grandson, Branden V. Jervey, of Charlotte, NC. She is predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Herbert V. Jervey.
Services will be held in the churchyard at St. Michael and All Angels’ Episcopal Church on Monday, February 14 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Nature Conservancy, Sierra, or other organizations promoting the conservation of natural resources.
