

COLUMBIA - Jeanie McGowan Holmes Martin, 91, of Columbia, widow of John Gaillard Martin, died Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Still Hopes Retirement Community. Her memorial service will be held at Trinity Cathedral on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at 2:00 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Canon Charles M. Davis, Jr. The family will receive friends after the service in the Stirling Room. Interment in the columbarium will take place prior to the service with family members. Mrs. Martin, a native of Edisto Island, was a daughter of Sarah Boykin and McGowan Holmes of Edisto Beach and Columbia. She attended Winthrop College and the Medical College of SC becoming a registered medical technologist. She participated in further studies at Duke University and McGill University. Before moving to Columbia, she was in charge of the laboratory at Charles Esdorn Memorial Hospital in Walterboro. In Columbia she was the cyto-technologist in Dr. Robert E. Seibel’s laboratory. After that she worked for the SC Health Department until her marriage in 1957. Her community activities included the Junior League, Free Medical Clinic, the Columbia Ball, Daughters of the Holy Cross at Trinity Cathedral and the Order of St. Luke the Physician. She and her husband were ardent supporters of Heathwood Hall Episcopal School. She was an avid tennis player. She is survived by sons, Rev. John Gaillard (Gil) Martin, Jr. of Rock Hill and McGowan Boykin (Mac) Martin of Columbia; grandchildren, SPC Dale Martin, James Martin, Ashley Martin and Mac Martin, Jr.; sisters, Ellen Wright of West Columbia and Margaret Robinson of Ocala, Fla. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by a sister, Sarah Boykin Holmes.
