
COLUMBIA - Thelma Jeanne Brown Crawford, 91, died December 31, 2016 at the Saluda Nursing Center, Saluda SC. Born March 3, 1925 in Orangeburg, she was the daughter of Henry Grady Brown, Sr. and Thelma Lou Smoak. Jeanne graduated from Dreher High School in Columbia and worked at Fort Jackson during World War II and for the Veterans Administration after the war, where she met her husband, Thomas Jackson (Jack) Crawford. Jeanne lived in Columbia for 65 years and at the Heritage at Lowman in White Rock for 20 years. She was a loving wife and mother, devoted to her family. She enjoyed taking care of her family, cooking, and reading. Jeanne was predeceased by her parents and husband, as well as her brother, Henry Grady Brown, Jr. and two sisters, Marilyn Brown McMillan, and Gertrude (Trudy) Riley Brown DeStefano. Surviving are her two daughters, Anne Smoak Crawford of Columbia, White Rock, and currently Saluda Nursing Center, and Susan Busch Crawford of Alexandria, Virginia. Also surviving are her nephews, Grady Brown III, Rev. Thomas Brown, Harry McMillan, John Destefano, Nikki Blease and Chuck Laffitte, as well as her nieces, Connie Reames, Linda Laffitte, Beth Crawford, Rhett Destefano, Margaret McMillan and Amy McMillan. The family would like to thank the Saluda Nursing Center for their wonderful care of Jeanne during the last phase of her life. Special thanks also go to Barbara Gulledge for her many years of devoted caregiving to Jeanne and her daughter, Anne. Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 in Greenlawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Thomas Brown presiding.
