
WEST COLUMBIA John Edward Stine passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2016, after a brief illness. While he never knew his birth parents, he was loved and nurtured by Ed and Dorothy Stine from infancy. After Dorothy's death he acquired Virginia Stine as a new mother. John was born on December 17, 1934, in Kansas City, Missouri. From an early age, encouraged by his grandmother, he developed a deep, lifelong love of history. He earned his Bachelor and Master degrees at the University of Missouri and his PhD at USC. John taught at Mitchell College in Statesville, NC, USC'S Union campus and Continuing Education division. He taught classes at CCI and several National Guard facilities. He was also an adjunct professor at Midlands Tech and Coker College. He taught at the Trenholm Road Shepherd's Center for 26 years and a class at Still Hopes Retirement Community for 16 years. Given the opportunity he would also teach at the coffee shop, lunch and dinner tables, anywhere else. He loved all animals and has happily joined all his cats and dogs. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his niece Karen Antonucci. John is survived by Marcia, his wife of 52 years; his sister, Mary Murry (Carl); her seven surviving children, Brenda, Kevin, Christine, Keith, Brock, Brent, Carrie; 21 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Sonja Bakalyar (Steve) and their two children, Elizabeth and Matthew; best friends, Mary Pruitt, Lynn Pruitt Nestor, Ronn and Todd Nestor, Lark Adams; and nephew, Jim Williamson. An ice cream social for his neighbors will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday August 4, 2016, in the Atrium of Still Hopes. A Celebration of Life will be held at So You Want to Dance Ballroom starting at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, 2016, for anyone who knew him or Marcia and want join together for visitation and remembrance of John. Family services will be held at a later date in Stockton, Missouri. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, is assisting the family.
