The daughter of the late Carey Rogers Kilgore, Jr. and Rosa Margaret Perrin Kilgore, she was born June 19, 1945 in Florence, S.C., but was raised in Bishopville, a place that she loved and relished reminiscing about the times spent at her grandfather's farm and Lee County in general. She attended and was actively involved at Bishopville High School and was selected to attend Girls State. She attended the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, and graduated in June, 1967 with a degree in elementary education and then lived and worked in Columbia until her passing. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Parish, the Assembly, the Current Literature Club, Covenant Bible Group, and the Henry Durant Chapter of the DAR in Bishopville.
Peggy served her community and church faithfully and consistently. She served as a founding board member of Sistercare, which she helped start while she was a member of the Junior League. She served Trinity as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School volunteer, and in numerous other volunteer roles. She was also a volunteer at the Orthopedic School for those needing physical assistance.
Peggy was committed to the education of children, including children with Special Needs. She taught fourth grade at Conder School; taught elementary ages at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School; was an assistant librarian at Heathwood: taught Special Needs children at Bradley Elementary School ; and was an assistant with the four year olds at Kilbourne Road Baptist Preschool.
Her major sources of enjoyment, other than children and grandchildren, were mystery books, English History, Jeopardy, and 50 plus years of going to Kanuga during July. Her major sources of annoyance were football and the misuse of pronouns after prepositions.
She was a source of committed love for all who survive her including her husband of 56 years George Eugene Lafaye, III, a daughter, Perrin Lafaye Roper (Lee), a son, George Eugene Lafaye, IV (Susanne), three grandchildren, Wiley Lee Roper, III, Angus Stewart Roper, and George Bradley Lafaye.
