

COLUMBIA - Nancy Cummings Hoffman, 64, passed away on October 1, 2018, after more than a decade-long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Nancy was born October 2, 1953 in Columbia, SC, and attended A.C. Flora High School and Clemson University before graduating from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in mathematics.
Nancy spent most of her career as an actuarial retirement consultant for large corporations employed by The Wyatt Company, Towers Perrin, William M. Mercer and PricewaterhouseCoopers in Washington, DC, Los Angeles, CA, Tampa, FL, and Philadelphia, PA.
Nancy was funny and whip-smart, and she never met a cat she didn’t want to bring home with her. Among her passions were photography, bicycling, music, hiking, skiing, racquetball, soccer, scuba diving and golf. She was also an avid piano player, reader and world traveler and brought a competitive spirit to everything she undertook.
Nancy was a life-long member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and married.
She is survived by her daughter, Lauren Hoffman, of Beaverton, OR; daughter, Gretchen Hoffman, son-in-law, Rett Thompson, and grandchildren, Marabel and Vaughn Thompson, of Portland, OR; and sisters, Alice Richardson (Clarence Richardson) of Lexington and Dottie Jean Shealy (Walter Shealy) of Newberry. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Evelyn Cummings.
Special thanks to Katherine Workman, whose care, friendship and love over the course of 7 years allowed Nancy to continue to live life to the fullest, and to Oakleaf Village, where she lived for more than 8 years.
Services for Nancy will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2018 with inurnment in St. Paul’s Memorial Garden Columbarium.
